The Upper Room Daily Reflection Minimize

Leaning to Trust
Thursday’s Reflection SOONER OR LATER, Christian spiritual growth puts you right up against the conflict between your voracious desire to stay in control and your call to surrender more deeply. Not all control is detrimental, of course, but you do need to give up trying to control the uncontrollable and learn to trust that all is [...]

God the Comforter
HIROSHIMA PEACE MEMORIAL CEREMONY (JAPAN) Wednesday’s Reflection JESUS CHRIST said, “I will not leave you orphaned.” He said, “God is your Father.” He would not treat God and people differently. He did not speak of people and the transcendent God as separated. He did not teach that God is far off and to be feared. He did [...]

The Formative Process
Tuesday’s Reflection SPIRITUAL FORMATION isn’t merely about the end result; it’s about the formative process itself. It’s about the mysterious artistic activity of the Spirit from the dawn of creation to the sunset each evening, in which previously unconnected elements are fashioned — formed — into a coherent whole. - Sarah Arthur The God-Hungry Imagination: The Art of [...]

Jesus, the Pray-er
Monday’s Reflection DURING HIS PUBLIC MINISTRY, through word and deed, Jesus demonstrated the importance of prayer. Prayer was central to his mission as a means of nurturing his relationship with God and staying focused on God’s will. Jesus was a pray-er. He prayed spontaneously and informally, matching his prayer to the moment. He encouraged others to [...]

Ordinary Sorrows
Sunday’s Reflection I ONCE heard a wise priest say, in a meditation on gratitude, that we should be especially grateful for whatever breaks our hearts. Reflecting on God’s promise to write “upon” our hearts rather than “within” them, he suggested that our own hearts are so hard that all God can do is write upon the [...]

The Stillness of God
Saturday’s Reflection THE STILLNESS OF GOD is a vast space of love and grace that can settle any disturbance within a person or a community. - Daniel Wolpert Leading a Life with God: The Practice of Spiritual Leadership From Leading a Life with God by Daniel Wolpert. Copyright © 2006 by the author. Published by Upper Room Books. All [...]

The Eternal Source
Friday’s Reflection “I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS.” This is the eternal source of our daily life of prayer. This is no technique. We are in deep waters of the most intimate of all possible relationships that flow to us — forever fresh and new — from minute to minute. And, as with all that lives, our [...]

Prayer Begins with Letting Go
Thursday’s Reflection JESUS CHALLENGED MARTHA to let go of her many preoccupations so that she could begin paying attention. Prayer begins with relinquishment, with letting go. You can’t have a good conversation with someone when you’re preoccupied and your mind is elsewhere. You turn off the TV, unplug the iPod, put your project on standby, and [...]

Seeing God’s Face
Wednesday’s Reflection GRACIOUS LORD, hope of Israel and joy of the redeemed: hear me when I cry to you out of the depths, for I long to see your face and to receive your grace as I rest in your Word of promise, even the Christ who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, [...]

Wrestling with God
Tuesday’s Reflection WE WRESTLE with God when what we pray for doesn’t happen. And if enough frustration builds up, our “nice” prayers will erupt in silent or spoken prayers using words we’re not even sure we are allowed to speak to God. - Steve Harper Talking in the Dark: Praying When Life Doesn’t Make Sense From pp. 23-24 of [...]
